NuoRTO - Resilience, Agency, and Inclusion for Youth

The NuoRTO project is founded on concerns about the marginalization and inequality affecting children and young people. It addresses the following challenges in recreational activities that exacerbate these disparities: 1) A growing number of children are excluded from recreational opportunities due to rising costs, skill-based selection processes, and the high commitment required for participation. 2) Instructors of children and youth leisure activities often lack the expertise to identify, support, and guide children and young people in need, including those from special or vulnerable groups, and their families. Research highlights that youth recreational activities are crucial for well-being and function as informal learning environments. Without adequate guidance and support, children and young people risk marginalization and exclusion from their communities. The project develops and implements a supplementary training program for professionals working with children and young people in municipalities, welfare areas, or the third sector. The target audience includes individuals in guidance, social work, sports fields, and students in these disciplines. The objective is to enhance participants' abilities to meet the needs of children and young people requiring support, assist their leisure activities, and guide them toward accessible recreational opportunities. The supplementary training equips professionals with additional tools, including understanding the needs of special groups, the nuances of guiding them, and knowledge about low-threshold recreational options and interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants can select training modules that best suit their needs. The project also emphasizes that low-threshold recreational opportunities do not reach all young people in vulnerable situations. Those excluded from recreational activities are at high risk of marginalization and may seek community on the streets or through harmful behaviors. To address this, the project trains experts by experience to work alongside professionals. Experts by experience, who may have backgrounds in mental health challenges, multilingualism, neuropsychological symptoms, or substance use, can, after training, support, motivate, and guide children or young people towards meaningful activities, enhancing their participation and agency. The project pilots a work pair model in which professionals and experts by experience jointly support children, youth, and their families in recreational activities. At the outset, the project will create a comprehensive overview of resilience-enhancing recreational and leisure activities for youth, the competency needs of professionals in the field, the support needs of children, young people, and families, and the utilization of experts by experience. Preliminary studies will identify needs, challenges, and effective models from the perspectives of employees, children, young people, and families. This initial assessment will inform the training content, developed using service design methods. Training themes may include identifying support needs, guiding skills and support measures for special groups, nature and adventure education, creative and active methods, culturally and gender-sensitive guidance, and expert by experience-professional collaboration in youth activities. Training will be offered in face-to-face, online, and intensive formats, ensuring accessibility for all target group members regardless of location. The implementation of the training is coordinated by Laurea University of Applied Sciences, with Outward Bound Finland and Church Resources Agency (Kirkkopalvelut) as partners. During the project, both the training program and the work pair model, along with their best practices, will be modeled. The study materials, training program, and results produced in the project will be available nationwide after the project ends, and efforts will be made to integrate them into the continuous learning offerings in the fields of social services, sports, and guidance. Additionally, the project will produce an evaluation tool for meaningful recreational activities for use by municipalities, welfare regions, and third-sector organizations.
