Well-being AI: Well-being at work and productivity in service sector SMEs in the AI era

The problem: According to surveys published in early 2024, 45% of Finnish companies are focusing on increasing productivity and efficiency rather than growth. Equally important is the use of artificial intelligence. In a Nordic comparison, Finland is the least productive country. Researchers agree that well-implemented well-being at work positively impacts company productivity. By contrast, a lack of well-being undermines labour productivity and causes significant economic losses. Despite a steady stream of reports and books on the subject, companies do not invest in well-being at work and fail to recognise its importance for an attractive employer image and a positive employee experience, which can be a significant competitive advantage even for small companies. Objectives: The main objective of the project is to produce and implement the necessary everyday innovations to demonstrate well-being and productivity in the project companies, to develop a participatory work culture in the project companies, to develop well-being and productivity in the project companies, to increase the use of artificial intelligence in the project companies to improve well-being and productivity. In addition, the project aims to disseminate the project and its results regionally and nationally, to mainstream the project results in cooperation with stakeholders, and to take on project management tasks. Activities/measures: concrete measures to support business development include 1) developing innovations that improve well-being and productivity, 2) developing an inclusive work culture in project companies, 3) improving well-being and productivity at work, and 4) providing project companies with basic skills and targeted solutions for using AI. All these measures are accompanied by skills enhancement. Measures supporting the project include 5) communication and marketing of project outputs, 6) stakeholder engagement and dissemination, and 7) project management. The enterprise-specific measures will be participatory, using service design, job design, thematic briefings and workshops, and AI-based solutions. Themes may include promoting open interaction in the current workplace, ensuring the availability and adequacy of the workforce, embracing diversity and supporting a diverse work community, hybrid work, improving working conditions and job satisfaction, accountability, forward-looking working practices, promoting community, communication, and interaction in the current workplace, supporting mental health, promoting work capacity, reducing sickness absence and management issues. The activities will result in a participatory digital platform, which will be completed during the project. The platform will include interactive material, where everyday innovations, information sessions, workshop results, and other relevant ready-made material for businesses will be compiled. The relevance of the content of the digital platform has been verified through regional needs assessments and contacts with enterprises. The content and implementation methods of the platform will be refined and completed based on the needs of the participating enterprises as they emerge during the project. The digital platform will be open to Finnish enterprises, who can use the material independently during and after the project. Outputs: The concrete outputs of the project include everyday innovations tested and implemented in companies to promote and integrate well-being and productivity at work, the development of a participatory work culture, improved well-being and productivity at work through company-specific assessment practices, increased use of artificial intelligence to support productivity and well-being at work, improved skills, new collaborative networks in the target companies, and a national digital platform to promote well-being and productivity at work. The partners: The national project covers Lapland, South, Central, and North Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, and Southwest Finland. It is coordinated by the University of Lapland and co-implemented by the Universities of Vaasa and Turku and the Universities of Applied Sciences of Jyväskylä, Oulu, and Turku. The consortium has a proven track record in jointly implementing two national ESF projects. The partners are experienced experts with multidisciplinary knowledge and practical experience in the field of well-being at work and extensive regional business networks for successful project implementation. Target group: SMEs in the service sectors most need development in the partners' geographical areas (target 10-15 SMEs per partner). The project will start with a small and limited number of SMEs. However, the number of SMEs will be increased during the project depending on the speed of implementation of the planned development activities. The SMEs in the service sector interested in this project have been selected based on a survey carried out in each region, after which the co-organisers have us
