The UNICOM+ project aims to utilise the extensive labor potential of highly educated international talents in the South-West Finland region more efficiently, thereby addressing the current and future deepening skills shortage in the area. Due to their background, international talents face greater challenges in integrating into working life compared to native Finns and are under a greater threat of unemployment upon graduation. As increasing number of international talents seek employment already after starting at higher education (HE), a solution to the labor problem must be sought in collaboration between the area's higher education institutions and public employment and entrepreneurship services. Due to this, the project will work closely with the new employment areas in Turku and Salo. The partner organisations are the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi and Turku University of Applied Sciences. They develop, pilot and integrate new services in their respective universities to facilitate the access of international talents in higher education to the open labor market, employment in existing companies and organisations, and support them in their entrepreneurship endeavors. Through the services developed and implemented in the project, international talentss are also better prepared to utilise the public employment and entrepreneurship services. In order to achieve the above, the project includes four work packages. 1. "Get a job in an existing company or organization" services: The target group is international talents in HE and especially those who are transitioning to active job seekers. Special attention is directed to talents whose access to the Finnish labor market is more demanding than usual, and the basic services offered have not proven to be sufficient. Target groups are also employers and domestic students, who take part in project activities targeted to international talents and benefit from the activities. In the work package, a HE Student Forum will be established, a Thesis Fair event will be organized, and networking support for international talents and employers from different industries will be implemented, as well as support for networking and cultural competence of international talents in generalist fields. The new services and operating models will be concretized into the service path “Get a job in an existing company or organization”. By participating in the project activities and services, the international talents: have networked with Finnish and Swedish-speaking students and experience a sense of community with them; know how to name potential employers in the area and have networked with at least some of them; recognize their own motivation and know how to communicate it in a way that appeals to employers in the area; and know how to find the services that suit them. The employers: have become familiar with the international talents of the region and understand the capabilities provided by the training; have understood the employment challenges of international HE students in the region and evaluated the possibilities of their own company to employ a HE student; and gained visibility and recognition among university students. The domestic students: have gained experiences of domestic internationalization and with the help of the contacts they create, in the longer term, positively influence, for example, the change in the recruitment culture, when the international talents have already become familiar to them during their studies. 2. "Future as an entrepreneur in Finland" services: The target group is international talents interested in entrepreneurship. Target groups are also company representatives, work-life professors and other experts as well as domestic students, who take part in project activities targeted to international talents and who benefit from the activities. The work package develops and pilots entrepreneurship-related workshops, Business Mentor Model, events focused on entrepreneurial stories, and creates an operating model for engaging working life professors and similar experts as mentors for international talents. The new services and operating models will be concretized in universities in the service path “The future as an entrepreneur in Finland”. By participating in the project activities and services, the international talents: have gained the understand the existing services and, for example, the understanding of the special features of the Finnish market has become clearer; find the services related to starting a company and get the necessary support for using the services regionally; are even more networked with entrepreneurs and others interested in entrepreneurship; awareness of entrepreneurship opportunities in Finland has increased; and understand entrepreneurship and business more than before.
