ProHarkka Southern Finland - Guidance Power for Language and Culture-Aware Internships in the Social and Health Care Sector

ProHarkka Southern Finland - Guidance Power for Language and Culture-Aware Internships in the Social and Health Care Sector project responds to the challenges of the social and health care sector in cooperation with other ProHarkka regional projects. As the number of foreign-language trainees increases, more training places are needed. The project develops language-supported guidance, which increases the number of training places. The language and culture-aware guidance skills of training supervisors vary and are incomplete; the project offers an opportunity to update and develop guidance skills to the level required for the job. There are challenges in customer and patient safety communication and information flow, which are addressed through language-aware guidance and the development of a language learning environment. Foreign-language trainees have difficulty finding employment. The project develops guidance skills and ensures the smooth running of training, which supports the employment of trainees and their integration into the welfare sector labor market. This also addresses the labor shortage in the social and health care sector and increases regional vitality. There is still insufficient national cooperation in the development of internships, which means that the results of different projects are not being utilized effectively. The ProHarkka Southern Finland project will create consistency at both the regional and national levels in terms of the availability, implementation, and supervision of training placements. Another challenge in developing training is the lack of a comprehensive network of experts and consistent operating models. The project will strengthen cooperation between higher education institutions and representatives of working life, coordinate cooperation between projects in different cooperation areas, and describe a uniform operating model for national use. The aim of the project is to develop and strengthen the language and cultural awareness of guidance skills in social and health care organizations. As guidance skills are strengthened and established, organizations will be better equipped to offer training places. At the same time, this will indirectly address the labor shortage in the sector. Another objective is to develop and establish a cooperation area-level and national operating model that supports the language learning and integration into working life of foreign-language social and health care students. The project also aims to strengthen cooperation between higher education institutions, welfare areas, and other social and health service providers, as well as to develop and share guidance skills in expert networks. The concrete results of the project and their measurement demonstrate the development of guidance skills, the effectiveness of training models, and closer cooperation. Surveys of project participants provide quantitative information on the development of guidance skills and the effectiveness of training models. Qualitative feedback collected from participants after training sessions and workshops indicates their usefulness and effectiveness. The increase in the number of training places is monitored quantitatively, for example, through surveys. The national operating model for guiding foreign-language students will be published in the final publication of the project and on the website. The long-term impacts include improved availability of training places for foreign-language students, improved learning of Finnish or Swedish, improved customer and patient safety, increased guidance skills and diversity in the workplace, and the establishment of a nationally uniform model as part of operations. Work communities will be better prepared to accept foreign-language students, which will increase the number of training places and facilitate the progress of studies. Students will receive systematic language support during their training, which will accelerate the development of their language skills and improve patient and customer safety. Work communities will receive concrete tools for language- and culture-aware guidance, which will increase the readiness of supervisors and work communities to encounter multicultural and multilingual personnel. The national operating model developed in the project will remain a permanent part of the structures of social and health care training and will support long-term cooperation between higher education institutions and workplaces. The impact of the project will be assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative assessment will cover the development of supervisors' skills and practical changes in work communities. The quantitative evaluation covers the development of the number of training places and foreign-language students, the training of supervisors and the use of tools, the development of students' language skills, and employment and the availability of labor in the social and health care sector.
