Technical assistance for rehabilitation and modernization of Stara Zagora Zoo

Stara Zagora Zoo was created in 1957 and is currently the second largest in Bulgaria after Sofia Zoo. For the last 60 years on a surface of 70 decares can be seen more than 400 animals of 80 species from almost all continents. The zoo is a public municipal property and is licensed with license № 42 from June 14th 2022 valid until July 2027. Since 2014 it has a status of a rescue center according to the Convention for trade with endangered species of CITES. The project proposal aims at elaborating some documents of quality for the application of Stara Zagora Zoo with the goal of executing its conservation role and preserving the biodiversity and the conservation of the protected species in it. In this regard, the management body of Stara Zagora Zoo initiated a displacement of the habitat of the bears and the birds of prey to a parcel of 60 decares located in the northern part of the zoo. The terrain was attributed by Decision № 1091 from January 30th 2014 of Municipal council – Stara Zagora for free usage to the “Zoo” department of Stara Zagora Municipality. In Stara Zagora Zoo are being raised 9 bears from the Brown bear species – 6 big and 3 small bears, as well as the following representatives of birds of prey in Bulgaria: 4 small falcons (Accipter nisus), 6 Common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), 2 Long-eared owls (Asio otus), 2 Tawny owls (Strix aluco), 4 Barn owls (Tyto alba), 2 Western marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus), 1 European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), 1 Booted eagle, 4 Common buzzards, 4 Eurasian griffon vultures. The elaborated strategic documents and the technical assignment for the elaboration of the investment project will contribute to the survival of the protected species in Stara Zagora Zoo in a habitat which is close to their natural one, in a cohabitation with the local population, in accordance with European trends, as well as to the execution of important research of the populations, the behavior and the threats to these species.
