Green Measures for Cleaner Air in Burgas Municipality

The Municipality of Burgas is included in the Southeast sector (code BG0006) for assessment and management of air quality (AQ) "Southeast" and is identified as a territorial unit exceeding the norms for the following indicators: sulfur dioxide, fine particulate matter (PM10and 2.5), and ozone (Order RD-969/21.12.2013). According to the AQ Improvement Program 2021-2027, one of the main local sources of PM pollution in the municipality are secondary dust emissions from transportation. Data analysis shows that for 2019, out of the total share of emissions from transportation (32%), 22% come from secondary dust emissions, equivalent to 184.54 t/y, compared to "transport-non-exhaust emissions" at 6.85 t/y and emissions from engines at 79.92 t/y. The Program indicates that transportation is the second most significant source of particulate matter pollution, primarily due to secondary dust emissions. Mandatory measures to reduce particulate matter emissions caused by secondary dust emissions include increasing the number of green spaces in urban areas, creating and/or expanding green belts and zones within the city. In Burgas, there also exist the so-called "mud spots," spaces between blocks of flats or compromised green areas. The main activities of the project are: research and analysis of the suitable investment areas vulnerable with respect to AQ and charged with significant social and environmental functions; preparation of a climate resilience report; development and expansion of green spaces, planting trees from recommended species, and installation of irrigation systems in selected areas; project management and publicity. There have been 50 intervention sites chosen covering a total area of 17.2332 hectares within the city of Burgas. The project will contribute to improving AQ by reducing PM10 emissions from secondary dust caused by transportation. The target groups affected is the population of Burgas–194809 people, tourists and visitors of the city.
