The objective of project is to close cages 1.1. and 1.2. of the Regional landfill for non-hazardous waste(RLNHW) for the municipalities of Vratsa and Mezdra, which are in suspended operation, with the aim of reducing the risk of further environmental pollution and preventing risks to human health. The project envisages reclamation and closure of cages 1.1. and 1.2. with an area of 27 160 m2 of RLNHW for municipalities of Vratsa and Mezdra and implementation of monitoring of the closed cage. The total area of the RLNHW site is 135,277 acres, including the territory of the old landfill, which was re-cultivated in the 1st stage of the development of the landfill. The main project activity is related to the execution of construction and assembly works on technical reclamation of cage 1.1. and 1.2 of the RLNHW for the municipalities of Vratsa and Mezdra, as well as their subsequent biological reclamation. Activities for technical reclamation of cages include: • Waste surface planning with sustainable slopes • Waste covering with an upper insulating screen to reduce atmospheric water inflow into them, respectively reducing the amount of leachate • Construction of a biogas collection and burning system • Construction of a system for monitoring the deformations of the waste body • Completion of the surface water management system • Supplementing the existing monitoring system with new stations Auxiliary activities for the preparation of consolidated documentation for proving climate resistance, analyzes and updating of an investment project are also included. Author and construction supervision will be carried out, as well as project management activities, visibility, transparency and communication. The target group is the population of both municipalities. Cages 1.1. and 1.2. of the RLNHW for both municipalities will be closed as a result of the project implementation and 27 160 m2 of land will be rehabilitated, which will be used for green space.
