The project promotes the development of blue biotechnology for chitinous shellfish residues. The ocean microbiome is investigated in search of new chitinases, enzymes relevant to the global biogeochemical cycle, waste management and production of high-value active compounds. The project elucidates the co-regulation of chitin degradation and secondary metabolism in the bacterium Aquimarine and provides new marine chitinases for the circular economy.
