Monitoring and evaluation of surface water quantity and regime II

On the territory of Slovakia, SHMÚ manages and operates the state hydrological network of surface water quantity in 418 water metering stations. The purpose of the project is to modernise the surface water monitoring system in order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the collection, processing and evaluation of hydrological data. This project aims to provide quality and up-to-date information on the status of watercourses, which is essential for water resource management, flood protection and further planning of measures to improve water status in accordance with national and European legislation. Expected results Upgrading the monitoring network: Installing new automatic devices on water metering stations to ensure more accurate and continuous measurement of water status, water temperature and other supporting parameters. Improving data collection: introduction of software for projects purchased automatic devices for online data collection and analysis in real time (in 15 min step), subsequent sending to the hydrological technology line, display on www.shmu.sk, sending to hydrological models for forecasting and warning system as well as for evaluation of the current hydrological situation. Improvement of directly measured data in the field: The purchase of new modern devices for direct measurement of flows in the field will streamline and improve the quality of workers' work, as well as help to obtain more accurate results across the entire range of water conditions, both during droughts and during flood situations. Improving worker safety: provision of special equipment and vehicles for safe access to the terrain, both in direct flow measurements and in hard-to-reach areas. The overall result is to maintain a systematic continuous assessment of the quantity and regime of surface water so that we can ensure the following: analysis of current and forecast future development of surface water quantity and regime in Slovakia, assessment of changes and trends in surface water quantity and regime, determination and update of hydrological characteristics and design quantities, water balance (hydrological and water balance), assessment of impacts on water status, assessment of ecological and chemical water status, assessment of effectiveness of implemented measures to achieve or maintain good surface water status, assessment of current hydrological situation on watercourses and forecast of development of hydrological regime, including its extreme phases (floods, droughts), provision of data and information for performance of watercourse management and river basin management activities, as well as performance of state administration and decision-making activities in the field of water, for fulfilment of obligations under agreements on border waters, for the purpose of assessment of water status on the basis of international and national obligations of the Slovak Republic (including reporting to the EC, ICPDR, EEA, WMO, ECE, etc.), the basis for evaluation of the impact of Gabčíkovo Water Work, as well as information and results from monitoring of surface water quantity in Slovakia are provided to interested persons from both public and private sector institutions.
