8973 - CO2Bloc - Prefer

The CO2Bloc project offers an innovative ecological alternative to the traditional manufacturing process of concrete products dedicated to the construction sector. This new process, based on the principle of mineralization, consists of combining steel by-products with CO2 to make masonry blocks. The production of carbonate building materials - which will take place at Prefer - is based on the Carbstone technology developed by Orbix and will enhance industrial fumes from Lhoist and secondary aggregates provided by Orbix. Using industrial fumes directly avoids a step of purification, concentration or liquefaction of CO2 and thus reduces the energy costs of the process. However, it must be possible to develop an efficient carbonation process from a gas that is less CO2-concentrated and has a high moisture content. The objective of the CO2bloc project is to validate the hypotheses - particularly related to the injection of fumes - to optimize the process and support engineering decisions on an industrial scale.
