Within the network of bicycle highways in East and West Flanders, the F6 bicycle highway (Ghent-Bruges) is one of the priority bicycle highways to be realized, because of the (sub)urban potential (both towards Ghent and Bruges, as well as Aalter and Deinze) and the potential modal shift. The bicycle highway is also in full development with a view to being largely completed by 2027. At the level of the railway bridge over the Leie canal in Landegem (Deinze), however, there is a missing link in this route of the F6 cycle highway. Currently, the current crossing of the canal is unsafe and uncomfortable for cyclists, and other alternatives are indirect (bypassing), also unsafe (mixed traffic), uncomfortable and less readable. The aim of this project is therefore the realization of a bicycle bridge over the Distraction Canal, in order to realize a smooth, safe and comfortable connection towards Ghent, Aalter and Bruges. This also allows a good link with the F422 cycle highway (located on the towpath along the canal, towards Eeklo and Deinze). It also provides a unique and secure connection between neighboring cores on this F6 route. The removal of this missing link by means of a bicycle bridge also creates a multiplier effect in bicycle use on that cycle highway route F6, and therefore also in the region. Practical examples in the suburban Ghent region show that a systematic realisation and the elimination of missing links resulted in an annual growth of approximately 20% on that route (i.e. F7, Deinze-Gent). By realising this modal shift in suburban mobility, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, other emissions and noise will also be achieved._x000D_
