Within the network of bicycle highways in East Flanders and Antwerp, the F4 bicycle highway (Antwerp-Ghent) is one of the priority bicycle highways to be realized, because of: 1. the (sub)urban potential and the potential modal shift to Antwerp and Ghent, and mainly between the Wase cities of Beveren, Sint-Niklaas and Lokeren, and 2. because the bicycle highway is almost fully cycleable (> 80% realization rate today). Recently, the works started on a missing link (bicycle bridge) to Vijfstraten in Sint-Niklaas, a bicycle tunnel was just realized in Lokeren and in 2023 the environmental permit is applied for for the missing piece in Destelbergen. By 2026, all missing links for a cycle highway between Ghent and Antwerp should be eliminated (see Annex 1705-1.1) This bicycle tunnel through the bridge body of the N70 in Beveren is thus an important missing link, and enables a smooth, safe and comfortable bicycle connection towards Antwerp, Sint-Niklaas, Lokeren and Ghent. This bicycle tunnel under the N70 also connects to the planned infrastructure works to optimize the railway line L59 Gent-Antwerp with closing of the crossing to the N485, with the provision of a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel under L59._x000D_ At the moment we already count about 1200 cyclists per weekday at the F4 in Beveren (Doornpark) and about 970 cyclists per weekday at the Beveren station. In the period 2022-2026, two missing links will be eliminated. Practical examples in such urbanised environments also show that the removal of missing links, e.g. by means of a bridge or tunnel, has a multiplier effect in bicycle use on that cycle highway route. By realising this modal shift in mobility, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, other emissions and noise will also be achieved._x000D_
