VITO strives for revolutionary progress in the cement industry by developing a pilot flash calciner for the production of alternative low carbon raw materials. This innovation offers a sustainable alternative to Portland cement, with up to 40% lower CO2 impact. By using secondary streams such as dredging and clay soil, which are converted into high-quality cement binders after heat treatment, the project responds to the need of the construction industry for affordable, low carbon cement options. This first open installation in Europe contributes to the Flemish Strategy for Smart Specialisation in Sustainable Materials and paves the way for companies to invest in environmentally friendly technologies.
