BlueApp, the innovation hub for the sustainable and circular industry of tomorrow

With this project, the University of Antwerp wants to realize a laboratory and pilot infrastructure in the domains of sustainable hydrogen, carbon recycling, circular water and pure air. This infrastructure will be located in BlueApp and connects (inter)national actors in an ecosystem around sustainable chemistry and materials. _x000D_ _x000D_ BlueApp, an initiative of the University of Antwerp, is an open innovation hub and technology accelerator for sustainable chemistry and materials. The BlueApp building is located on the eco-effective Blue Gate Antwerp business park. Its mission is to connect complementary actors within the (inter)national ecosystem for sustainable chemistry and materials. Our ultimate ambition is to make a substantial contribution to a healthy environment and climate neutrality. _x000D_ More specifically, BlueApp aims to develop, validate and demonstrate innovations in sustainable hydrogen, carbon recycling, circular water and pure air in a relevant environment. In these domains BlueApp wants to use a wide range of technologies such as electrochemistry, plasma technology, photo and thermocatalysis on (semi) pilot scale (TRL 3-7). With this, we are focusing on a market with enormous potential that is highlighted in all Flemish and European roadmaps for climate neutrality. _x000D_ In order to optimally support multidisciplinary collaborations, efficient scaling-up and economic valorisation in these domains, there is a need for specialised R&I infrastructure. Such infrastructure that is open to researchers from both knowledge institutions and companies active in chemistry, cleantech, climate tech and circular economy is not present in Flanders today. _x000D_ _x000D_ Specifically, it concerns the layout of 870 m2 of laboratories in BlueApp. Six different labs will be developed. Three labs focused on technologies for the circular use and upgrading of CO2 as well as the production and storage of hydrogen. We then realize a single lab for the development of technology for the realization of a healthy indoor and outdoor climate. Finally, there are two supporting laboratories in which, on the one hand, technological solutions can be built thanks to engineering and prototyping equipment and, on the other hand, solutions can be validated using analytical devices in an accredited context. These labs will be used for the implementation of collaborative projects, leased to start-ups and scale-ups and used for the development of living labs and services for companies. Companies and knowledge institutions will be able to use infrastructure, services, expertise and equipment in BlueApp and thus shorten their time-to-market on the way to economic valorisation in Flanders and Europe. Only in this way can we really take the road to climate neutrality and a healthy environment. _x000D_
