The project includes the reconstruction of the current Pater Sangersbrug (N761 BE -N296 NL) over the Common Meuse which forms the connection between Maaseik (Belgium, province of Limburg) and Echt-Susteren (Netherlands, province of Dutch Limburg). The reconstruction of the bridge will consist of a shift towards sustainable multimodal urban mobility. The project is being used to optimize the functional relations, bicycle and foot facilities on the bridge. The new bridge has a sustainable design (185m length, 21m width) with better separated safer traffic flows and a cyclist and pedestrian zone of 5.5m and 3.5m width respectively, an extension that makes the bridge more attractive for school-age youth, commuter traffic and tourism in this valuable region. On an average work or school day, ±1,500 cyclists use the bridge. It is expected that the new design will invite and encourage even more to this functional bicycle use. Currently (23/01/2022) for the bridge, which is part of the upper-local functional cycle route network, the change as a bicycle highway was approved at the BFF amendment committee, at the provincial council of Limburg and at the transport region council. The proposal now goes to the Minister for approval. This is with the objective to make a connection with the fast cycle route/through cycle route on Dutch territory that is under construction.
