The Railway Park between Draakplaats (Zurenborg) and Luitenant Naeyaertplein (Borgerhout) is an important link in the larger railway park from Draakplaats to Eilandje. The entire railway park will be a new park space, which is essential for these most densely built and populated districts of the Antwerp city centre. The Spoorpark contributes to a more climate-adaptive city by focusing on landscape and ecological quality. With the creation of a new park, the available space is designed sustainably with climate-adaptive interventions. The realized Spoorpark will make better use of the scarce open space in this district than the current suboptimal use. The project proposal meets a great need for usable greenery, ecology and biodiversity for the Zurenborg and Borgerhout districts. The Spoorpark tackles the water and drought problems with infiltration and buffering on site and also has a wider impact in terms of water: it slows down and reduces rainwater on the way to lower and flood-prone areas and is an essential link in the circular urban water network. With this park, the city of Antwerp is creating new cool spots against the heat stress. At the same time, the Spoorpark, together with the Over de Ring ring room, forms a strategic green space within the city's climate ambitions. With the construction of the Railway Park, the city of Antwerp is pursuing the following objectives: a rainwater neutral park, and thus improve the water problems in the area; circular water use, thus reducing dehydration and saving drinking water; cool spots, and thus reduce the heat stress; ecology, thus optimising biodiversity and ecological connectivity; use green, thus increasing quality of life; social and societal objectives such as meeting and connection.
