Aging Screen

There is a drastic increase in age-related chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, research and development in gerontology, the science that studies aging, is more important than ever. This is also reflected worldwide in increased investments in the development of new or repurposed drugs that address the mechanisms of ageing. In the AGING SCREEN project, Hasselt University is developing a pharmacological screening platform with which we can map ageing in tissues and cells. In the preclinical research at UHasselt, 7 of the 12 hallmarks of ageing are currently routinely measured. The aim of the project is to extend the expertise around these analyses to the 12 characteristics, and thus to develop a preclinical multiplex screening platform that covers all aspects of aging at the cell level. In addition, we aim to develop an innovative platform that can measure not only the characteristics of cell aging, but also disease-specific markers, and all this within the same platform that can measure up to 100 markers simultaneously. In addition to UHasselt's own research, this platform will be offered to knowledge centres that investigate age-related diseases and companies that develop medicines to prevent or treat aging diseases. Through this platform, companies can determine which products effectively address the hallmarks of ageing. This state-of-the-art platform is crucial to strengthen the innovation potential in our region. It will enable new collaborations and be a pole of attraction for our region for companies focusing on ageing and age-related diseases. This project is part of a larger approved SALKturbo initiative (‘Parent and Wiser: Limburg as a knowledge hub for innovation in ageing”), with which UHasselt wants to ensure that Limburg is top of mind when thinking about research into ageing. Several companies, from small and medium-sized biotech to large pharma, have already expressed their interest in using AGING SCREEN through letters of intent (LoI).By investing in research and development in gerontology, our region can contribute to the development of new treatments and services for the increasing group of elderly people in our society. As an attraction pool for knowledge institutions and companies, we also attract future-oriented jobs and talent to our region. This platform is an absolute added value for the development of new medicines for our ageing population, so that the implementation of innovations in elderly care can be strengthened and accelerated. This will improve both the ageing citizen and the economy in the region.
