The F424 bicycle highway, which runs from Zelzate-West to Terneuzen, is a priority within the network of bicycle highways in East Flanders. The bicycle highway connects cities such as Ghent, Evergem, Zelzate, Sas van Gent, Sluiskil and Terneuzen. The area is internationally known as the North Sea Port area, with a lot of employment and huge cycling potential. Currently, a unique, safe north-south bicycle connection in the North Sea Port area is missing north of Zelzate. Through the project, a bicycle tunnel will be built under railway line 55 that will provide a unique, smooth, safe and comfortable bicycle connection between Zelzate and Terneuzen. For example, the missing link within the approved ‘Raamplan Fiets’ for the Ghent Canal Zone is solved.
