Bioscape Antwerp

Bio-Incubator Antwerp, together with the University of Antwerp (UA), the University Hospital Antwerp (UZA) and other stakeholders from the life science sector (biotech and pharma), aims to build an innovative ecosystem with spin-offs, startups, incubators and accelerators in the various disciplines of research, development and valorisation. However, there is a shortage of suitable space in Antwerp to build this ecosystem. As a result, Bio-Incubator Antwerpen wishes to build a bio-incubator ‘Bioscape Antwerpen’ on the UA Campus 3 Oak. It is a completely new campus of approximately 28,000 m2 gross floor area (GFA) consisting of 1 central community building of 9,987 m2 and 2 accelerator buildings of 8,600 m2 each. Within this ERDF project, financial support is requested for the realisation of the high-quality infrastructure of the community building, which will accommodate spin-offs, start-ups and incubators from the life science sector. The community building is modular and equipped with a high-tech fit-out, so that the needs of all types of unknown customers in this sector can be met to the maximum. The design of this campus is also entirely dedicated to the cross-pollination and community-building between the various actors that will establish themselves there and the researchers and employees of nearby knowledge institutions (UA, UZA, Vaccinopolis, ...). The 1st floor of the community building is reserved for spin-offs and startups and consists of individual lab suites of 75 to 100 m2 that are plug-and-play furnished. Starting companies are in the research phase and mainly need lab space to carry out their tests and analyses. Office space is subordinated here, so a shared office space was chosen where one pays per workplace. Unique on this floor is also the shared equipment room that is fully equipped by Bioscape Antwerp with equipment (walk-in fridge, LAF cabinets, autoclave for sterilization, dark room, large centrifuge,...). With this shared-equipment business model and the plug-and-play environment, the spin-offs/startups do not have to bear these investments themselves. In this way, their resources can be fully used for their own development and research. The goal is to develop a dynamic and modular building complex where spin-offs and start-ups from the life sciences can grow. Through rental contracts of up to 1 year, they are encouraged to grow into an incubator and to move into one of the 4 overlying modular floors that can be divided into a maximum of 4 units of 250 to 300 m2 each. To unburden and support the companies as much as possible, Bio-Incubator Antwerp will also be responsible for building management (waste, logistics, permits, etc.) and organizing (network) events and activities for community building. In the foyer, which can also be used as a break-out space, starters can network with other tenants and with employees/researchers from the nearby research institutes. Together with the two accelerator buildings and in collaboration with, among others, the UA, the UZA, Vaccinopolis, POM Antwerp and the UAntwerp Science Park in Niel, this project will contribute to the development of a local life science ecosystem.
