General programme for the restoration of Atlantic salmon in the Dordogne basin in Nouvelle-Aquitaine 2023-2024

The various operations of the general program for the restoration of Atlantic salmon in the Dordogne basin in New Aquitaine focus on restoring, sustainably, a salmon population that must strive towards self-sufficiency. Since the species has completely disappeared from the basin, its restoration inevitably involves restocking operations. The release of nearly 500,000 juveniles annually from Bergerac, Castels and private fish farms must allow the return of several hundred broodstock that will reproduce naturally in the favourable habitats of the rivers upstream of the Dordogne basin. Successful restocking operations are monitored through careful genetic monitoring (assignment of relatives) of returning individuals and flocks of hatchery spawners. Characterization, monitoring of the environment, monitoring of ecological continuity and the impact of dams (especially hydroelectric dams), awareness-raising/communication around the program, complete the restocking operations in order to act effectively for the recovery of the salmon population in the Dordogne basin.
