University of Cyprus: Green and Smart Energy Management

The University of Cyprus designed the project to reduce energy consumption and increase the rate of renewable energy use. By extension, to reduce the consumption of conventional fuels for energy production and to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and polluting gases. In addition, to increase energy efficiency and improve the thermal comfort conditions of existing public buildings on campus. All of the above will contribute to the achievement of Specific Objective 2(i): "Promoting energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions" of Priority 2: "Energy and Environment" of the Operational Programme. The whole effort will develop the technological background for the future energy management system of the Campus, utilizing the technological developments in the field of renewable energy installation and smart energy management. This innovative effort requires the use of active green energy production systems, energy saving systems, as well as information and communication technologies through the utilization of the know-how of the University's members. Upgrading existing systems to save energy, produce renewable energy and manage it smartly will help turn the campus into a green, smart and sustainable one. It will reduce the operating costs of the organization and contribute to the protection of the environment, energy saving and the provision of better services to University students, academic and administrative staff, alumni and the wider public. The systems that will be implemented will contribute to the cultivation of energy awareness among the general public and will be used as a testbed for the development and testing of new technologies that can be applied in other public and private law organizations in Cyprus. In addition, the Project will be the foundation on which the energy management system and the transformation of the Campus into an energy community will be based. The overall objective of the project is part of and serves the European and national objectives for the green transition to renewable energy sources towards a low carbon economy and increased energy efficiency of public buildings. Reducing energy consumption will contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely: 1) "Cheap and clean energy", with an increase in RES shares. (2) 'Responsible Consumption and Production', by improving energy efficiency; and (3) ‘Climate action’, by reducing pollution. Any reduction in operating costs will give the PK the opportunity to invest the money that will be saved in other actions.
