Innovative NOx reduction technology in large combustion sources fuelled with coke oven gas

One of the EU’s priorities is to reduce the negative environmental impact of energy, including the reduction of NOx emissions. The law forces them to be reduced in exhaust gases from coke oven gas to 100 mg/Nm3 within 3 years (possible further reduction of the limit). In the case of a large combustion source of this gas in the Zdzieszowice Coke Plant (electric power plant), the current NOx emissions are 249 mg/Nm3 – the need for a reduction of at least 60 %. The industry uses solutions to reduce NOx content in coal and natural gas exhausts up to 100 mg/Nm3. However, there are no solutions for exhaust gases from coke oven gas (high water vapour content, presence of pollutants that poison the catalyst, among others. HCN, CS2, alkali, HCl). The aim of the project is to develop an innovative technology to reduce NOx content in exhaust gases from a large source in Zdzieszowice Coke Plant (gas collector, assembly of 3 coke oven-fired boilers, common exhaust emitter – approx. 450000 Nm3/h). The necessary research to achieve this will be carried out in a pilot installation. It will consist of 3 reactors with different catalyst systems, selected on the basis of preliminary tests at the test bench. The object of these tests is selected commercial catalysts for coal and natural gas exhaust gas and catalysts developed on the basis of national experience; hybrid systems, i.e. combinations of above mentioned pilot reactors, located between boilers and chimneys, will also be tested in a temperature window optimal for the system being tested. The selection of the catalyst system and operating parameters will be based on validation tests, taking into account criteria such as: activity, selectivity, service life, NH3 slip and costs. Pursuant to Article 25 of Regulation (EC) No 651/2014 of 17 June 2014 declaring certain types of aid compatible with the internal market in the application of Articles 107 and 108 of the Treaty (OJ L. I'm sorry. EU L 187/1 of 26.06.2014).
