NeuroSmog: effects of air pollution on the evolving brain

Air pollution negatively affects the development of the brain. They cause miscarriage, low birth weight, and increase the incidence of neurodevelopment disorders such as ADHD. In this project, we want to combine the latest methods for assessing pollutant concentrations, neuroimaging, environmental epidemiology and psychological diagnostics to understand the impact of air pollution on the developing brain. Poland allows to study air pollution at levels many times higher than previously described in studies of the impact of pollutants on brain imaging. We want to investigate: what parts of the brain are particularly damaged by air pollution? How’s the kids with ADHD? What children without psychological problems? Combining genetics with environmental causes, ADHD is the quintessence of “civilisation sickness”. Our project can provide new knowledge important for shaping public policy in this important area of air quality protection.
