Active protection of particularly endangered relic plant species of the family Salicaceae in peatland habitats

Data obtained during research conducted in the last 3 years by employees of the University of Warsaw University of Technology in Lublin and Białystok University of Technology indicate a drastic decline in the population of boreal willow species in their natural habitats in eastern Poland. The aim of the project, to be achieved by 31.09.2020, is to protect the area of PPN and Knyszyńska Forest (an annex map) of 2 species: the willow willow and blueberry willow by supporting and restoring the population of these species in selected locations. These activities are part of the plan of protection tasks of the PPN and the conservation plan for the “Stare Biele” nature reserve in the Knyszyńska Forest. The plants needed for the project will be obtained in ex situ tissue cultures (PLN 199477). The created parent will be used to create new and supply current populations of these species in the area of PPN and Knyszyńska Forest (PLN 190768.97). An important step of the work will be the adaptation of plants in conditions converging to the prevailing natural habitats (in special aspects). Appropriately prepared plants will be planted for previously selected sites. The condition of new populations, as well as habitat conditions will be constantly monitored and evaluated. Natural monitoring will consist of assessing habitat conditions (abiotic and biocenotic); 143645.27 PLN) and plant condition based on ecological, phytopathological, entomological, physiological and morphometric and developmental (PLN 107906.17) analyses. In parallel, information and education will be carried out on ways to protect the active species of plants that are particularly at risk of extinction, related to peat bog ecosystems (PLN 56868).
