The main, overarching objective of the project is to effectively eliminate health and environmental risks in areas affected by pollution from the former Chemical Plant “Zachem” in Bydgoszcz. Residents of the surrounding villages located in the Vistula Valley are particularly exposed to direct contact with toxic substances. In addition, contaminated underground waters migrate into the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley, which may cause irreversible natural losses in the pollution zone, in the riverbed and on the Vistula runway, potentially to the Baltic Sea. The aim of the project is to carry out effective remediation of the ground-water environment of areas contaminated as a result of the activities of former ZCh “Zachem”. Its unique feature is the ability to remove a wide spectrum of organic impurities, not just a selected chemical (e.g. phenol). The multi-directional operation of the technology improves the physicochemical parameters of soil, ground and groundwater and reduces concentrations of organic pollutants.
